What will the landlord register make public?
Updated . Checked against official sources.
Tenants will be able to check whether their landlord, or a landlord they're about to rent from, is registered. Beyond that, the government hasn't yet said which details will be visible. It has promised to publish that list later.
Confirmed so far
- Tenants will be able to see whether a landlord is registered
- Councils will use the register to target enforcement
- The government says data will be handled under data protection law and it will "safeguard the privacy of landlords"
Not decided yet
- Exactly which landlord and property details tenants or the public can see
- When registration numbers must appear on property adverts (planned, but it needs further legislation)
- Whether a landlord's home address will be shown, hidden or partly hidden
- What specific privacy safeguards will apply
- Whether other public bodies will get access
Landlord and agent bodies, including Propertymark and the NRLA, have asked the government to clarify what will be public. Propertymark has suggested showing only a redacted address.
What you give the register
Giving information to the register isn't the same as it being published. When you register, you provide:
- Your name, date of birth, home address, phone and email (or company details and a nominated contact)
- A correspondence address in England or Wales for each property
- Each property's address, type, bedrooms, occupants and households, and any licences
- Rent amount and frequency, and which bills are included
- Gas safety, electrical safety and EPC details
How the other UK registers handle this
Scotland's register lets anyone search by postcode or registration number but doesn't show landlords' home addresses. Wales and Northern Ireland also let the public check registration. Compare the other nations' registers.
Questions landlords ask
Will my home address be public on the landlord register?
Not decided. The government hasn't published what will be visible. In Scotland's register, landlords' home addresses are not shown.
Can tenants check if a landlord is registered?
Yes. The government has said tenants will be able to see whether their landlord or prospective landlord has registered.
When will we know what will be public?
The government says it will publish the information the public and tenants can access at a later stage. We'll update this page when it does.
